Semi-mechanical

Semi-mechanical switching was a method of connecting calls where a human operator keyed the calling party's desired telephone number into a keyset on her desk, and the call was completed automatically by machine. It was used in the first trial installations of the panel system when it was thought that customers would respond poorly to machine switching.
