CMS:Outside Plant Display

The Outside Plant Display contains telephone poles, insulators, cables, and tools. Outside plant refers to infrastructure outside of central office switching equipment (which is inside plant).
Open Wire Aerial Plant
Telephone poles dominate the second floor of the museum. They demonstrate open wire aerial infrastructure that was common before bundles of insulated wire were used.
Underground Plant
The underground plant section is primarily dedicated to infrastructure for buried cable bundles. There are manholes and a manhole training model in this section, as well as fiber optic splicers.
Cables
The display contains several examples of high-pair-count cables used to link telephone central offices and long distance switching points together. Cables include paper-insulated 1200 pair, coaxial, undersea, and fiber optic. In addition, several conduits are displayed that served as carriers for the cables as they snaked their way through cities and towns.
Tools
This section consists of several cases full of tools and materials that were used by outside plant technicians for tasks such as soldering and lead casting for waterproofing.
